Do you love a good deli sandwich? How about one that can feed the entire family for cheaper than going to a fast-food restaurant? Great, now that we’ve got your attention, let us direct it to the unassuming, cash only sandwich spot that has been serving hungry Astorians for well over eighty years. Sal, Kris And Charlie’s Deli serves up sandwiches that make a five dollar footlong from that other sandwich shop look like a toothpick in comparison. While not all the sandwiches this place is slinging are huge, the ones that are, really are. One of these behemoths in question is a monster of a sub that is aptly named “The Bomb”. This thing is piled high with layers of sliced ham, turkey, slow roasted beef, mortadella, pastrami, pepperoni, provolone AND American cheeses, lettuce, onion, tomato, hot and sweet roasted peppers, and your choice of condiments. We’ll give you a moment to wipe the drool from your mouth. You good? Cool. While that sounds undeniably delicious, we may not all be in the mood and/or high enough to tackle a sandwich like The Bomb. Lucky for you, they have a wide selection of more reasonably sized sandwiches as well as sides, desserts, and other tasty treats. Even their drinks are delicious and unique! They offer a “Manhattan Special” which is apparently a coffee flavored soda that we must try now that we know about it! WHAT TO DO IN QUEENS THIS WEEK (5/13 – 5/19)
1. Opening Day – 51st Annual Greek Festival – St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (5/15)
Do you love Greek food and art? Yeah? Well, it’s a great thing you live in Astoria because the 51st annual Greek Festival starts Thursday May fifteenth and runs from 5pm to 11pm. Come hungry and don’t forget to bring cash so you don’t miss out on any of the Greek street foods, art, and delicious desserts!
2. Queens Night Market – Flushing Meadows Corona Park 5pm to 11pm (5/17)
Are you a foodie living in queens and disappointed by the lack of multicultural food fair options? Honestly, you shouldn’t be. There are so many here in this beautiful borough that choosing the right one to attend might seem like an overwhelming task. We got you! Whether you want Egyptian-style chicken tenders, bite-sized samosas with creamy cucumber raita sauce, or deep-fried banana pudding ice cream with strawberry syrup drizzle, Queens Night Market is the place for you. Boasting between seventy and one hundred different local food vendors offering a mix of tasty treats from all over the world and prices are capped so you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg to enjoy yourself. This is the perfect event for a date, or even just a stroll around the park while eating skewers of assorted meats. They also have a rotating entertainment schedule including shows for kids as well as bands and music for all! The event is free to attend and welcomes the whole family, even your furry friends. There is plenty of space to lay out a picnic blanket to enjoy your snacks in style. Also, they serve booze! The party starts at 5pm every Saturday and runs until midnight through the summer. Can’t make it this weekend? No worries! Weather permitting, Queens night market happens every week so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to try some of the best, most affordable food options the city has to offer!
3. Q.E.DCOM! Screening and Drinking Game – Shrek Edition! – Q.E.D. Astoria (8pm)
Shrek and drinking games. A combination as old as time. Q.E.D. Astoria has been running a show called Q.E.DCOM! where they watch classic Disney Channel original movies and play drinking games along with the movie! Now they have decided to open the show up to non-Disney films and coming May nineteenth, the long-awaited Shrek show is finally here! Show starts at 8pm but if that showing sells out, they’ll open a 6pm showing as well. Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory, and the venue is very 420-friendly (outside!) so you can feel free to spark up out front before the show if drinking isn’t your style.
