Tacos & Time Capsules: A Terp Bros Newsletter

By:  Bill Wallis

Hello again, weekly Terp Bros newsletter readers! We’re back again to guide you on another week-long journey of new terps, fresh tastes, and fun things to do right here in Queens. As always, some of this week’s suggestions are brought to you by, well… you. If there are any restaurants, events, or products you’d like to see shouted out in upcoming newsletters, feel free to hit us up on Instagram and let us know. We love hearing and incorporating your suggestions! Halloween is over, and the streets are scattered with orange leaves and discarded pumpkin spice latte cups once again. However, the holiday season is just getting started and so is the heat hitting the shelves here at Terp Bros Astoria and Ozone Park! Grab a sweater and some leftover confiscated Halloween candy and don’t forget a pen and paper because you won’t want to miss any of what we’ve got lined up for you this week!

WEEKLY FEATURED PRODUCTS

1. Runtz Pre Rolls – 2pk, 1.5g – Assorted Strains (Astoria)

Runtz has been a key player in the cannabis industry for years now. No matter which state, city, or legal country you’re in, you’ve likely heard the name Runtz thrown around once or twice. Regardless of whether you’re just hearing about them now or if you’re familiar and already have an opinion on their flower, their pre rolls are a different beast altogether. First off, let’s talk about the convenience of a two pack of quality pre rolls. Who hasn’t finished a joint they really loved and then wished they had another one the next day? With the Runtz two packs, you’re covered when that inevitable second craving kicks in! Each joint weighs in at 0.75g which is fifty percent larger than the average multi pack of joints, meaning you get more out of each. Next, the quality. These things are great. The cure is perfect, the burn is smooth, and the flavors and highs are just what you want out of quality pre rolls. Not to mention a price point that barely tops some single joints on the market that don’t come close to these in quality. Currently available at Terp Bros Astoria are the Bubblegum runtz and Pink Runtz, both of which are hybrid flavor bombs! Closer to Ozone Park? Not to worry, Runtz flower is available there in Bubblegum Runtz and White Cherry Runtz!

2. Good Tide Rosin Gummies – Assorted Flavors and Effects (Ozone Park)

Come with us, if you will, on a journey to a tropical paradise. Sure, November is here and temperatures in New York have started to once again plummet, but not in the land of Good Tide. Close your eyes and hear the sound of warm waves crashing in the distance. The smell of salt water and tropical fruit juices fill your nose and the warm sand under your feet gives way with pillow-like softness with each step you take. Now open your eyes. You’re still in New York and it’s still cold outside. However, if you need a temporary visit to that beautiful getaway we just described, you can always get a taste of the tropics with Good Tide rosin gummies! Currently available at Terp Bros Ozone Park in Mango (indica), Pineapple (sativa), and Guava (hybrid), no matter which you choose, you’ll be instantly transported back to that beach. Or, maybe you’ll just get nice and high from a gummy made with solventless rosin, making it more bioavailable and the high longer lasting than other gummies. Regardless, bring a coat. It’s still cold outside.

3. Rolling Green Flower – Sub Zero – 3.5g, Hybrid (Astoria)

Sometimes, instead of highlighting an entire brand of products, one strain within a brand stands out so much it feels like it deserves a shout out of its own. This is one of those cases. The Sub Zero flower from Rolling Green is a stand out among many amazing strains from the same company. While all of their flower is amazing, something about the Sub Zero will have you looking at a half finished jar and thinking “Finish him.” Sorry, we couldn’t highlight a strain with that name and not make a Mortal Kombat joke. We’re only human, after all. All jokes about wildly popular video games turned into wildly popular movie series aside, it will truly be hard to not finish a jar of this once you open it. Its sharp, fruity, earthy flavors and mellow, relaxing effects will have you heading back to Terp Bros for another jar (or three) as soon as the high wears off. So, you may be waiting a few hours. This is a crowd favorite for a reason so make sure to grab some while supplies last!

WEEKLY RESTAURANT HIGHLIGHT – LEMON ICE KING OF CORONA

Alright, we can already hear you saying that this isn’t a restaurant but hear us out. We highlight restaurants, sit down and otherwise, as well as the occasional food cart serving up delicious, savory treats week after week. We know you love to try the spots we highlight and we hear your feedback. For those who have been asking, here is a classic dessert spot for after you’ve already hit your favorite eatery here in Queens and are looking for a refreshing sweet treat to cap your night off. The Lemon Ice King of Corona has been serving velvety smooth cups of Italian Ice in a list of flavors longer than a mobster’s rapsheet since 1944, and they’re open all year so regardless of the weather outside, when the craving for a sweet frozen treat kicks in, they’ve got you covered! Their list of flavors is truly impressive. They offer everything from classic flavors like lemon, rainbow, and cherry to more adventurous flavors like rum raisin, cotton candy, and even black licorice! Our favorites are the lemon (of course) as well as the raspberry, peanut butter, and orange vanilla. No matter which of their twenty five plus flavors (including sugar free options) you choose, you’ll be happy you went! Taste a piece of New York history and see where Kevin James dropped his scoop on the ground at the end of the opening credits of King of Queens. When you go, make sure you tell them that Terp Bros sent you and let us know which flavors you end up choosing. They’re all delicious!

WHAT TO DO IN QUEENS THIS WEEK

1. Underground House Hunting – Flushing Meadows Corona Park

Before we get too far into this one, no. We are in no way advocating for digging in a public park regardless of what may or may not be lurking just below the surface. Even if that thing might just be a hyper luxurious subterranean home built under the marsh land of the park during the New York World’s Fair back in the sixties. Okay, now that we’ve got your attention, yes. Back in the sixties, during the height of panic due to the Cuban Missile Crisis, a would-be entrepreneur named Jay Swayze decided that a Soviet-proof underground home building business would surely be a profitable business venture. Much to his dismay, and likely due to the dollar admission fee to the exhibit compared to other exhibits with no fee whatsoever, the fair turned out to be a flop for Swayze. Reports state that at the end of the event, his exhibit had secured a grand total of zero new contracts or investors. Because of this, and the high cost of the construction of the home itself, it is rumored that Swayze simply opted to not demolish the home at all, and rather simply remove the furniture and decorations, lock the door, and leave the home just feet below the grounds of what would become one of the most highly visited parks in the city. Does this mean you should go out looking for this time capsule of a home? No, you shouldn’t. Not just because it would be illegal and we want you all to be safe, but also because there is a petition to get an official excavation of the site greenlit so we may all get to see just what was left under the park all those decades ago! Until then, we highly suggest you visit the park and grab a hot dog or an ice cream cone and enjoy a nice walk while wondering if a relic of the past might be hiding right beneath your feet.

2. Grab some Bodega Tacos at St. James Deli in Astoria

Alright, hear us out. We understand that the idea of grabbing tacos from a bodega doesn’t exactly sound like an activity worth highlighting. However, this is no ordinary bodega and these are no ordinary tacos. Also, considering our restaurant highlight this week was a place that only serves frozen desserts, it’s only fair we give you at least one new savory spot to check out this week, and nothing hits quite like tacos when the weather starts getting chillier. This place is cranking out high quality Mexican eats for reasonable prices in a clean, unassuming deli and we are one hundred percent here for it. We think you should be too! You can’t go wrong with any of their food, honestly. From their amazing tacos to their flautas, tortas, burritos and more. Everything is stuffed (and we mean STUFFED) with their house made meats and topped with fresh veggies and homemade salsas. The flavors being served up in this spot are worthy of a sit down restaurant but the place only has a few stools so if you’re lucky you may be sitting down to eat but you’ll likely be taking them to go. Not to worry, you won’t be going far. After smelling the food while you grab your beverage and snacks of choice, you won’t make it more than a few feet out the door before deciding to sneak a first bit. And, if you’re anything like us, that first bite quickly becomes the last as you make a mad dash back inside to grab extra napkins. Yeah, they’re that good. Try for yourself this week when the munchies kick in.

3. Give yourself a much needed and well deserved break

No catch to this one. It is what it sounds like. This time of year can be difficult and stressful for so many reasons. The days are shorter, the temperatures are colder, and the ever growing pressure of the upcoming holidays can all be overwhelming. Because of this, it’s important to give yourself time to adjust and celebrate small wins. Whatever it is you do to reduce stress and feel better, do it. If that means you crank the AC/DC and put together jigsaw puzzles in a pirate costume, puzzle it up, matey! If you just want to cozy up with your partner and a nice meal to watch one of your favorite movies, or just smoke a joint and have some time to yourself to sit and think and breathe, do that. It’s important to give yourself a break and remind yourself that you’re doing great. No matter what you do to feel better, take some time this week to do it. Be kind to yourself and be kind to others. Know that so many people struggle through this time of year and could use some extra space, grace, and understanding.

Well, once again we find ourselves at the end of another newsletter. We wish we could give you new lists every day but we also know that there are only so many new products, restaurants, and events you can try, eat at, or go to in a week. But there’s no need to be sad! We’ll be back next week with an all new list of fun events, delicious treats (sweet and otherwise) and amazing new products hitting the shelves here at Terp Bros Astoria and Ozone Park! Until then, whether it’s here at the shop, or out grabbing an Italian Ice or some delicious bodega tacos, or searching for hidden underground time capsules in the middle of one of the city’s greatest parks, we hope to see you out and about here in this beautiful borough of Queens. Until next Tuesday, stay lit Terp Bros fam!
