All you would have to do is read through a handful of our previous newsletters to know that Astoria is as diverse a food neighborhood as any. You just have to know where to look. This week, we suggest you look in the direction of Barkada Social Club. They’re offering up fantastic Filipino flavors that will have you wondering if you’re still in the US. Yeah, it’s that good. You may walk out the door after your meal and expect to be in the Filipino wilderness. No such luck. You’re still in Queens. But that’s good news, because BSC is right here in Astoria, so you can get tongue-tingling Filipino flavors any time you want! Here’s how to make the best of the menu. First, their burrata salad with poached pears is a game changer. Rarely do we suggest you not skip a salad on a menu, but seriously, this one is worth trying out. For appetizers, you can’t go wrong with classics like crispy fried Lumpia and Sinigang Fried Chicken Wings with a tasty Filipino tamarind dry rub. For something new, try their vegetarian Heart of Palm Calamari with a chipotle mayo sauce for dipping. Finally, the mains. From burgers to fish to steak and classic Filipino street food, you will not be disappointed with anything you choose! WHAT TO DO IN QUEENS THIS WEEK
Much like last week, our suggestion section this week is a bit more simple. Christmas and Chanukah may be over, but we still have one last holiday to make it through before we can officially say goodbye to 2025. That’s right! Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, and you know what that means. Soon, Times Square will be filled with aimlessly meandering tourists clogging sidewalks and intersections as well as confetti that may or may not have people’s personal and private information on it. Remember that? Crazy. That being said, our suggestion this week for what to do is to just take it easy. The holidays are almost over, you did great, everyone loved your gifts, and it’s almost time to hit the reset button and start the whole thing all over again! This can be a bit stressful for some, and we totally understand. That’s why we aren’t suggesting any specific events or activities this week. We know that just making it through the year can be a lot for people, and the last thing we want to do is make anyone feel like they have even more they need to do. Instead, we just suggest you relax. We aren’t saying you shouldn’t celebrate. You should. Just do it in a way that makes sense for you and where you are in your life currently. If that means you dress up, go out with friends, and drink until you can’t remember your own name, then do that (responsibly). If it means staying in and soaking up those last precious moments of your Christmas tree before societal norms make you feel like you have to take it back down, do that.
